Today we announced that there will be a second volume to the 40 Below series. This time we are expanding it to include stories, essays, and poetry from all of Alberta. This is going to be Alberta’s Winter Anthology.
The 40 Below Project is seeking unpublished submissions of short fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction for an upcoming print anthology to be released in 2015. We are looking for works about or inspired by winter in Alberta. We are actively searching for works from writers living in or who have lived in Alberta. Works from other writers may also be considered as long as the theme is upheld.
What we are looking for:
Short Fiction: maximum 5000 words. Any genre will do, as long as the theme of winter in Edmonton is explored. This is your chance to show the world a side of your city that few people see. Be creative. Be bold. Remember that sometimes it gets so cold that your eyelids freeze shut in the early mornings. Write!
Poetry: What is Alberta in winter if not a poet’s paradise? Why do snowflakes have so many patterns? Where do the magpies go when it’s 40 below zero? Poets may submit up to 5 poems at once. Please keep them a reasonable length. Remember that Robert Frost is watching you. Make your words sing.
Non-Fiction: What exactly is non-fiction? We have no idea. Show us what you’ve got. If you have an essay or a creative non-fiction piece that fits into our theme then send it along. Is winter a better time for truth or a better time for lies? Tell us why. Tell us everything you know. Please limit your piece to 3000 words.
Contributors whose pieces are accepted will be paid an honorarium and receive contributor copies of the finished product. Multiple submissions are encouraged.
Deadline is July 31st, 2014
We are using Submittable to organize all our submissions. Any questions or concerns can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please DO NOT send submissions directly via e-mail.
